Deadbolt Locks

DEADBOLT LOCKS- ROODEPOORT

OVERVIEW

Deadlocks are best used for gates and major entry doors. They are tough, dependable and they are the go-to lock against burglars who use crowbars and sledgehammers. Because of their tough design, deadlocks are found on many homes. However, toughness and the ability to withstand brute force is not enough to make a good lock. Despite their many advantages, deadbolt locks also have certain weaknesses. So if you’re planning to buy a set of deadbolt locks for your doors then you will need to consider its pros and cons, and the following will help you do just that.

WHAT ARE THE POSITIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF A DEADBOLT LOCKS?

As we’ve already mentioned, deadbolt locks are quite tough, also very durable. Because of their durability, deadbolt mechanisms are integrated on all kinds of locks and not just deadbolt locks. This makes them the ideal choice for major doors, and they offer better protection than the average lock. Another important feature of deadbolt locks is that they last much longer than conventional locks. Deadbolt locks can last for several decades and generally require little maintenance. They just need to be cleaned and maybe oiled occasionally in order to keep them in good condition.

It’s also worth mentioning that deadbolt locks are fairly versatile. They can, for example, be combined with other types of locking mechanisms, thus giving them added versatility. A good example of this are hybrid deadbolt locks, which feature double as well as single cylinders. The extra cylinders allow them to be opened either by a thumbturn mechanism or with a key. Finally, it’s worth mentioning that deadbolts are rekeyable, but certain products are easier to key than others, which is why you should choose yours carefully. If possible, always get a deadbolt lock that is easy to rekey.

WHAT ARE NEGATIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF DEADBOLT LOCKS?

Now that we’ve talked about the advantages of deadbolt locks, let’s examine some of their weaknesses. The two different types of deadbolt locks have different weaknesses. First of all, let’s talk about single cylinder locks. The problem with these locks is that they use a key cylinder on the outside and a thumbturn on the inside for opening and closing the lock, which means that they can easily be opened without a key if someone breaks in through the window. This is also the reason why single cylinder deadbolt locks are used on front and back doors. They are great for keeping people out, but not much good for anything else.

On the other hand, double cylinder deadbolt locks feature key cylinders on both the inside and the outside of their doors, which means that you can only open this door with the use of a key. This is a bad thing because even though the locking mechanism is very secure, you could end up locking yourself out if you lose your key. So even though double cylinder deadbolts may offer additional security, they will force you to carry your keys around with you at all times. For some people, this isn't a problem, but there are others who consider it a nuisance.
